WJCAC Basketball Spotlight: South Plains travels to Odessa Monday night

LEVELLAND — The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will look to pick up a pair of conference road wins on Monday when they travel to Odessa College. The Lady Texans will tip at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30. Both games will be streaming live at spctexans.com and Michael Wiiest of KLVT Radio Levelland will call the courtside action.

The Lady Texans will be looking to pick up their second win in conference play as they enter Monday night with an overall record of 14-8 including a 1-5 mark in conference play. South Plains is averaging 67.5 points per game and shooting 42.5 percent from the field on the year. Freshman Gabbie Green leads the Lady Texans in scoring with 11.3 points per game and Chantel Govan will look to score in double digits for the third consecutive game come Monday night.

The Lady Wranglers enter the contest with a 14-7 record and are 2-4 in the WJCAC. Odessa knocked off second-ranked New Mexico Junior college on Jan. 25, ending a three-game losing streak which included one point losses to Western Texas and Howard. Sophomore forward Tanka Gapare leads the Lady Wranglers in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game and is shooting 45 percent from the field.

The Texans are riding a three-game win streak and have won five of their previous six, their most recent win coming on Jan. 29 against Clarendon in which Isaiah Maurice recorded his third double-double of the season as the Texans pounded the Bulldogs 81-55, improving to 14-5 on the year and 6-1 in the WJCAC. South Plains sits one game behind eighth-ranked Odessa and will look to add another top 25 win to their resume.

Odessa comes into Monday night with an 18-2 record on the year including a perfect 7-0 mark in the WJCAC. The Wranglers have won nine straight dating back to Nov. 18 and are 8-0 at home this season. Freshman guard LJ Figueroa is averaging a team-leading 20.9 points per game, shooting 60.5 percent from the floor and 48 percent from 3. Keandre Cook is averaging 15.3 points per game for the Wranglers, shooting 56 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the charity stripe.

Following Monday's game, South Plains will return home on Thursday, Feb. 1 when they host Midland College on 'Think Pink' night at the Texan Dome. The Lady Texans will tipoff at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30.
