WJCAC Basketball Spotlight: South Plains travels to New Mexico Junior College Monday night

The South Plains College men's and women's basketball teams will look to pick up a pair of conference road victories on Monday in Hobbs when they take on New Mexico Junior College.

The Lady Texans will tipoff at 5:45 p.m. MST, followed by the men's game at 7:30. The Lady Texans have a season record of 13-6 and will be looking for their first conference win of the year. The Texans come into Monday with an 11-5 record including a 3-1 mark in the WJCAC.

The Lady Thunderbirds are currently ranked second in the country thanks to an 18-0 overall record and are 2-0 in conference play. The Thunderbirds enter Monday night with a 13-4 record and are 2-1 in the WJCAC.

Freshman Gabbie Green leads the Lady Texans in scoring after 19 games as the 5-foot-7 guard from Bellville, Texas is averaging 11.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Mikayla Kuehne is shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 41.6 percent from 3, averaging 11.3 points and 4.1 boards per game. La'Praisjah Johnson comes into Monday night averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, shooting 39 percent from the floor on the year.

NMJC is led by sophomore center Alexes Bryant who leads the team in scoring with 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Bryant is shooting 61 percent from the field and 70 percent from the perimeter after 18 games. Sophomore forward Ni'Asia McIntosh averages 13.5 points and 8.9 boards per game, shooting 53.8 percent from the floor for the Lady Thunderbirds.

South Plains' Isaiah Maurice leads the Texans with a 67.9 shooting mark after 16 games, averaging 12.2 points and 4.6 boards per game. Texas Tech signee Deshawn Corprew is shooting nearly 48 percent from the field, averaging 11 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Raymond Doby is averaging 8.2 points per game and leads the Texans on the glass with 6.1 boards per contest. 

Sophomore Marcell Haskett anchors the Thunderbird offense averaging 16.5 points per game, shooting 43.3 percent from the floor and leads New Mexico with 3.5 assists per game. Freshman guard Franklyn Penn Jr. is shooting nearly 54 percent from the field after 17 games, averaging 12.1 points and 4.8 boards per game.
